In addition to undertaking asbestos laboratory testing in accordance guidance documents ‘AS 4964 – 2004 Method for the qualitative identification of asbestos in bulk samples’, Analytix also undertakes asbestos sample testing to UK guidance document ‘HSG 248: The Analysts Guide’, in conjunction with our technical methodology. This enables us to be the only asbestos laboratory in New Zealand that is accredited to identify all six regulated fibre types instead of only the three most common.
On the 4th April 2016, new regulations pertaining to asbestos were implemented under the ‘Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016’. As part of these regulations there is now an implicit duty under Regulation 11 – ‘Duty to Analyse Samples’ to use only an accredited WorkSafe or IANZ approved laboratory to undertake asbestos sample testing.

Asbestos air sample analysis
Analytix offers the evaluation of air samples on membrane filters in accordance with HSG 248 and NOHSC:3003 (2005) Guidance Note on the Membrane Filter Method for Estimating Airborne Asbestos Fibres 2nd Ed.
Analytix receives samples mostly concerned with Control Monitoring air sampling during asbestos removal, and to determine the ambient airborne fibre level of locations containing asbestos products. Control samples are those static samples taken as an indicator of the effectiveness of process control techniques. They are not indicative of actual occupational exposure and cannot be compared with occupational exposure standards.

Many workplaces generate inhalable and respirable dusts that have the ability to penetrate deep into the lungs, and exposure to any type of respirable dust may cause health effects. Dust in air can result in contamination in the nose and the conductive airways (i.e. inhalable dust), which often causes physical discomfort and irritation (runny nose, sneezing, watering eyes, coughing), in turn causing rhinitis or bronchitis.
Prolonged inhalation of fine dust containing a proportion of crystalline silica can cause a specific type of lung damage called silicosis. Inhaled non-specified dusts in excessive amounts may contribute to a number of dust related lung diseases – including inflammatory reaction in the lung, resulting in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Analytix now offers a Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry laboratory, with the capability to test for traces of methamphetamine from suspected contaminated dwellings. The test is carried out on wipe samples according to NIOSH method 9106.
Swab samples from the dwelling are taken and sent to the laboratory where they are extracted and analysed using GC-MS. Results for methamphetamine greater than 1.5μg/100sqcm exceed the current New Zealand guideline levels.
